Alan Schwartz, president of the Monticello Harness Horsemens Association, told legislators he and his membership believe Empire Resorts, owner of Monticello Casino and Raceway, isnt as interested as company officials say in keeping the track in operation.
MONTICELLO Expressing feelings of betrayal and fear, members of the Monticello Harness Horsemen's Association came out en masse to the County Legislature meeting on Thursday, asking legislators to help ensure they don't lose their livelihoods.
Empire Resorts, which operates the Monticello Casino and Raceway where the horsemen work, has repeatedly said it does not intend to abandon the track or the horsemen.
But unless the state requires it, Empire's casino project with partner EPR Properties near the site of the former Concord Resort may no longer include a relocated horseracing track.
And while Empire has said the existing track facility will be retained, the horsemen are worried it will become a forgotten stepchild.
We believe they don't want a racetrack, charged Horsemen's Association President Alan Schwartz. They don't want us there.
